Indonesia is now the world’s 12th largest aviation market with plenty of scope for future growth. Domestic passenger numbers increased by 22.77% from 2009 to 2010 with figures for Q1 2011 showing a 17.96% increase for the same time last year (Statistics Indonesia).
The Ministry of Transport aims to build 14 new airports by 2030. A fund from the 2011 budget has been set up for the construction and renovation of 118 airports throughout the country.
Indonesia’s airline industry is ideally positioned to play a central role in passenger transportation throughout the country and the region as economic activity in regions outside Java intensifies. Based on current growth, domestic and international passenger numbers are poised to reach 75 million by 2020 (Centre for Aviation and Statistics Indonesia).

Tony Tyler, president director of IATA, said during his visit to Indonesia in September that the country could be the sixth-fastest growing market for international passengers.
In 2014, Indonesia will rank as the ninth-largest domestic market and among the top 10 for international freight, he said.

Jakarta – The International Air Transport Association (IATA) outlined the priorities for Indonesia’s aviation industry. “Now is the time to plan and build for the future. With 240 million people living on thousands of islands and great world-class tourist attractions, the potential for aviation to grow and drive economic development is enormous. Coordinated government policies to ensure safety, cost-efficient and effective infrastructure and environmental sustainability are needed,” said Giovanni Bisignani, IATA’s Director General and CEO.
With 230 million people and an archipelagic country, Indonesia becomes one of the fastest growing markets for aviation industry. Having an average 10% passenger growth per year, aviation remains one of the preferred mode of public transportation in Indonesia. This can be evidenced by the number of existing airlines and how the level of their expansion in improving services better, such as adding more flight routes and more fleets.

Indonesia has an opportunity to increase the absorption of aircraft maintenance market as growth in world airline industry continues to increase significantly. Estimated maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) market will reach globally U.S. $ 56.7 billion in 2014, an increase of approximately U.S. $ 49.3 billion in 2009 (15.01%) and in Indonesia, aircraft maintenance market is quite good. In 2009, this market absorbed about U.S. $ 750 million, while in 2010 approximately U.S. $ 1 billion. That figure is predicted to rise to $ 2 billion in 2014

PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk signed a memorandum of cooperation agreements the procurement of new aircraft and aircraft engines by the tenant company (lessor) GE Capital Aviation Services valued at USD 10.8 million. Such cooperation includes six Boeing 737-800 New Generation (NG) engines and three CFM56-7B engines.

The government is preparing a draft about an integrated aviation industry area named Aviation Park. Regions of aviation industry are expected to bridge the needs of airlines, especially for maintenance and repair aircraft.
With the region's aviation industry, it is hoped that Indonesia's aviation industry will increasing competitiveness in the global market. The area will accommodate all stakeholders in aircraft maintenance, ranging from procurement of spare parts to maintenance workshop. Indonesia has to attract investors and private sectors to invest in this field.

Based on data at the transport ministry, the number of airlines serving scheduled flights totaled only 16 in April 2008. They include Garuda Indonesia, Merpati Nusantara airlines, Indonesia Air Asia, Lion Air, Mandala Air, Wings Air, Batavia Air, etc. In addition, the demand for millitary and surveillance aircraft and technology is set to increase as part of the Goverment’s upgrading programme.

The Indonesian National Carrier Association (INACA) recordered that in 2009 there were 43.8 million air passengers compared to 37.4 million in 2008, an increase of 17 percent.

Inaca data shows that currently Indonesia has 210 airports across the country. State airport operators PT. Angkasa Pura I and PT. Angkasa Pura II manage 13 and 12 airports respectively, while the rest are managed by the Transportation Ministry.
It was recently reported that Angkasa Pura II has allocated Rp. 2 trillion in capital expenditure to expand several airports.

MATARAM – Indonesian Air Force TNI planning to buy 16 Aircraft Super Tucano aircraft made by Embraer of Brazil to replace the tactical fighter aircraft OV-10 Bronco North American Rockwell.
Aircraft replacement has been planned since 2007, but will be applied this year after the government gave the budget support.

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Air Force Chief of Staff Vice Air Marshal Imam Sufaat said there was an urgent need to replace the force`s Hawk MK-53 aircraft.
"We will propose the replacement again to the Defense Ministry," he stated after officiating the transfer of the duties of the chief of the Air Force Education Command (Kodikau) from Vice Air Marshal Sukirno to Air Commodore Daryatmo here Monday.
Wings Air, a Lion Air subsidiary, has received three of the 15 ATR 72-500 aircraft ordered from ATR in 2009. The contract for 15 ATR 72-500s along with options for 15 ATR 72-600s is valued at a total of $600m. The ATR 72-500, powered by Pratt & Whitney 127M engines, can fly 78 passengers at speeds of up to 276kt.
Defense Ministry puts a contract order of three units of Dirgantara Maritime Patrol CN235-220 aircraft, for Indonesian Navy, which totally covers US$ 80 million. The signing of the contract by Dirgantara Indonesia CEO, Budi Santoso, and General Director of Indonesian Defence Facility, Marshall Eris Herryanto, takes place in Jakarta on the closing of National Workshop on Defence Industry Revitalization on 11 December 2009.
The construction of Lombok's international airport in Tana Awu village, Central Lombok, is hoped to be complete by October this year, state officials said on Sunday.
In a coordinating meeting between Vice President Jusuf Kalla, Transportation Minister Jusman Syafeii Djamal and State Minister of State Enterprises Sofyan Djalil, in Mataram, Kalla emphasized the importance of the rapid completion of the project in order to support the Dubai Emaar Properties investment project on the island.
